Crossing boundaries on and off the field - we take pride in our events
Throughout the year we host exciting and engaging events for the community to participate in and learn more about this sport. Some of our highly successful events include:
2005:
OFSAA Sport Summit- OCDO coaches instructed a captive audience of Physical Education teachers from various school boards and introduced cricket as a rapidly growing sport.
2006:
The Youth Cricket Festival in Peel - in partnership with the Community Environment Alliance we held a well attended day long festival featuring a Community Leaders Team vs OCA Youth. The community team included MP Harinder Takkar, MPP Peter Fonseca, other delegates and Peel Regional Police. A youth cricket exhibition preceded the main event.
2007:
Crick-a-thon for the Heart and Stroke Foundation - we held a non-stop 5 hour long cricket marathon with Under 11 to Under 15 participants to help raise awareness for Heart Health (South Asians are at particularly high risk). The event was held at South Common Community Centre in Mississauga and had nearly 60 youth cricketers take part.
2008:
Youth 6's - we held an exciting weekend of cricket for Under 11's and Under 13's with the Youth 6's Tournament. Players were placed in teams of 6 and competed in a "Six a Side" series of matches.
2009:
Indoor Youth Championship- held an indoor tournament for Mississauga youth at the Under 11, 13, 15 and 17 age group levels. It was an exciting event which helped to keep youth active during the long winter months.
2010:
Cricket Volunteers Seminar- we organized two seminars to help educate volunteers on cricket rules, team play, scoring, umpiring and team management. Group participants included parents, community leaders, senior players and youth players who were involved or interested in getting involved in volunteering in our programs.
2011:
Community Cricket Camp (Mississauga)- held an open camp for Mississauga youth in the school summer holidays, helping to introduce cricket to more than 50 new participants. The week long camp taught fundamental cricket skills and everyday a match was played. Age categories were Under 13 and Under 17. This has become a yearly fixture for us.
2012:
Mississauga International Youth Cricket Series- was a keenly contested 4 match series between the USA Cricket Academy U-18 (comprised of players from all over the USA) against Ontario Cricket Academy U18. USA took the series 3-1 and the standard of cricket was excellent all round.
2013:
Peel Region Cricket T20- we introduced a weekday T20 knockout competition at the recreational level for youth and adult- it was a great addition to the league format we have.
2014:
The Mississauga Cricket Festival "A Celebration of Cricket Under Lights" created history as the first ever top level matches played under floodlights on an official cricket field in Canada! The two day event featured top club teams in the province facing up against our academy club. The event was well attended and had an enthusiastic crowd both nights. Past Mayor Hazel McCallion, current Mayor of Mississauga Bonnie Crombie and Honourable MP (Federal Minister of Sport) Bal Gosal were on hand to lend their support for the historic event. The festival was played in honour of Brandon Paltooram a highly talented player whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence in 2008.
